MARJATTA HOLMA & UMPPA NIINIVAARA: 'KOHTAUS'
14.6. - 24.8.2025
This summer, Måll is proud to present 'Kohtaus', a joint exhibition by artists Marjatta Holma and Umppa Niinivaara. The show brings together Holma’s spatial paintings and Niinivaara’s ceramic sculptures in a quiet, charged encounter — a meeting of forms and elemental forces.
Installed across Måll’s expansive space, the large-scale works form an immersive setting — something to step into and move through. Seen together, Holma’s and Niinivaara’s pieces open up a world that feels both grounded and otherworldly, inviting stillness, attention, and a shift in perspective.
On view all season. Free admission.

Marjatta Holma (b. 1976) is a Turku-based painter whose large-scale works explore the tension between material, surface, and space. Working in oil and tempera on linen and cotton, she builds spare, layered compositions that combine architectural stillness with tingling energy and presence. Her process is as much about removing as adding: by washing, lifting, and peeling back layers, she reveals what remains once the non-essential has been stripped away. Holma graduated from Turku Arts Academy in 2004 and her works are included in the collections of Kiasma, the Finnish State, the Wihuri Foundation, and the City of Turku.
Umppa Niinivaara (b. 1970) is a Karuna-based sculptor known for her raku-fired ceramic sculptures. Her work explores the emotional resonance of natural forms, drawing inspiration from forests, seascapes, and endangered ecosystems. Working with hand-building, casting, and press-molding techniques, she creates immersive, spatial installations where time and place dissolve. Niinivaara holds an MA in Fine Art from Winchester School of Art (2009) and a degree in visual arts from Turku Drawing School (1997).
